What is Wingdings?
Wingdings is a family of dingbat fonts originally developed in 1990 by type designers Charles Bigelow and Kris Holmes for Microsoft. Included by default in Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and subsequent operating systems, Wingdings allowed users to easily insert graphical ornaments, icons, arrows, and gestures into text documents before modern emoji existed.
Unlike a spoken or written natural language, Wingdings does not have its own grammar, vocabulary, or pronunciation. Instead, it is a character mapping system where standard keyboard keys (such as letters, numbers, and punctuation) are visually replaced with graphical pictograms.

Wingdings vs. Normal Unicode Text
When you type the letter A in Microsoft Word and change the font to Wingdings, the underlying character is still the ASCII byte 65 (the letter 'A'). If you copy that text and paste it into an email or Discord, it will simply appear as regular English text unless the receiving app also has the Wingdings font installed.
Our online translator solves this problem: Instead of changing the visual font styling of regular letters, it maps each character to its true Unicode Dingbat counterpart (such as U+270C for the Victory Hand ✌). These standard Unicode characters render reliably across all modern web browsers, smartphones (iOS/Android), and social media platforms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Wingdings, character mappings, font compatibility, and copying symbols.
What is Wingdings?
Wingdings is a proprietary "dingbat" symbol font originally created in 1990 by Charles Bigelow and Kris Holmes for Microsoft. Instead of rendering traditional alphanumeric Latin letters, Wingdings maps standard keyboard keystrokes to graphic symbols like hands, arrows, zodiac signs, smileys, and office tools.
Is Wingdings a real language?
No. Wingdings is not a spoken or written natural language with its own grammar or syntax. It is a visual character-mapping typeface. When someone types in Wingdings, they are typing regular English/Latin characters that are rendered visually using graphical pictograms.
How does this Wingdings translator work?
Our translator converts your standard text into official Unicode Dingbat symbols that visually correspond to the classic Windows Wingdings 1 character mapping. Because our tool generates true Unicode characters (rather than relying on a locally installed font file), you can copy and paste the translated symbols anywhere.
Can I convert Wingdings back to English?
Yes! Our tool features full two-way translation. Switch to "Wingdings → English" mode or click the Swap (⇄) button, paste your Wingdings symbols, and our reverse-lookup engine will decode the symbols back into standard English letters.
Can I copy and paste Wingdings symbols into Discord, Instagram, or TikTok?
Yes! Because our translator maps characters to universally recognized Unicode dingbat symbols (such as ✌, ✉, ✈, ☠, and ♈), you can copy the output and paste it directly into social media bios, chat apps (Discord, WhatsApp, Telegram), video game nicknames, and documents.
Does Wingdings work on mobile devices (iOS & Android)?
Yes. While mobile operating systems do not typically have the legacy Microsoft Wingdings font file installed, modern iOS and Android devices have full native support for the Unicode Dingbat symbols output by this translator. They will render consistently across mobile browsers and apps.
